Division 15 Survey of Member Attitudes and Expertise Regarding Education Policy and Practice
This survey is being sent to you by the Educational Policy and Professional Learning Ad Hoc Committees appointed by President Nussbaum for the 2017-2018 year. The purpose of this survey is to gather ideas from members about how Division 15 can effectively contribute to the development and implementation of educational policy and practice. We seek your input to help us think through ways we might do this.

We have two goals with this survey. First, we want to begin to assemble a list of Division 15 members’ skills and expertise in order to create a data base of willing experts that would: (a) interact with media and/or policy representatives about current events, policies, or emerging issues relevant to educational psychology; and/or (b) engage in professional learning initiatives with policy and practice partners.

Second, we want your input about whether and how Division 15 should become more proactively engaged in policy response, analysis, advocacy and professional learning initiatives.

Part II: What should be Division 15’s Role in Policy?
The Ad Hoc Committee is considering mechanisms through which the Division might become proactive in policy response, analysis, and advocacy. One option is to develop relevant Position Statements/Policy Briefs based on Division 15 members’ expertise.

Position Statements are viewed as advocacy-related documents that summarize a position that is for or against specific policy initiatives. These statements are based on the most up-to-date available data and analysis and are written to reflect an organization’s commitment/values regarding educational policy activities. Position Statements can be written/distributed during the legislation development phase (before policies are passed/enacted) as well as after legislation has been passed and when the policy is set (or in motion).

Policy Briefs are documents that summarize the relevant research available regarding the effects of specific policies and practices. Briefs may or may not include specific recommendations for practice. The purposes of Briefs are multifold and include: educating policymakers, practitioners, and/or citizens, assisting Division 15 members with talking points for initiating discussions with local policymakers, and helping to clarify (for public and practitioners) (mis)conceptions regarding common practices. For example, Division 15 might originate or support a Policy Brief concerning best practices for homework. Such a Brief could outline specific research informed positions/practices and make recommendations for both policy and practice.
